As a result of environmental disasters such as the Exxon Valdez, the US Coastguard required specialised insurance to cover this extra risk. Shoreline was one of the first mutuals set up to deal with this new requirement.
The symbol represented a sea bird rising phoenix-like from the waves and the first rulebook made use of the exotic patterns to be found on pebbles along any shoreline.
